Low, Textured Bridal Buns: Ultimate Guide

Hey! Welcome to my little corner of the internet. If this is your first time here, I’m Dareece, a bridal hairstylist based in Durham, NC. So a few days ago I had a bride reach out about working with me. She wants to do a low bun for her wedding day and she sent me a couple of wedding hair inspiration pictures. Most of the buns she sent were very polished, sleek and slick. However, in her last picture, one of the hairstyles had some texture to the hair. So I asked her: did she prefer a more polished, sleek bun or did she want to try a textured low bun. She wasn’t quite sure what the difference was, so I put together a visual for her to see the differences. Then I thought to myself, there are probably other brides out here in the world that may not know exactly what a textured bun is. Therefore, I am here now to give you everything you need to know about a low textured bun to help you decide if it’s the best fit for you!

Exactly what is a low textured bun?

Simply put, a low textured bun is a hairstyle that can have ridges, waves, twists, braids, etc throughout the crown and even the bun itself. When you run your hand across the hair, you will feel the different variations of created texture underneath your hand. You can see different layers of depth and dimension throughout the hair from the texture created. This hairstyle creates a soft, romantic effect and face framing pieces left out in the front are the cherry on top!

What Hair Texture is needed to achieve this style?

Believe it or not, you can achieve this look with any texture of hair. Many brides come to me and want this type of bun for their wedding day but they’re concerned that their hair is too straight, wavy, curly, coily etc. It’s ok! You can create texture in the hair, no matter what your normal hair texture is. Proper heat styling, correct product usage, and crafty manipulation of the hair can get you a low textured bun. Please note that if you plan on using hair extensions, make sure the hair extensions match your current texture of hair. Meaning that if you have silky, straight hair, ensure the extensions are silky straight as well to create a seamless textured bun. If you are a woman of color with natural hair and want a natural textured bun, make sure your hair extensions have a natural texture that matches your hair.

How Long does your hair need to be?

This is a good question! Personally, I prefer your hair to be a bit past your shoulders if you want to use your own hair without extensions. If your hair is not quite that long, no worries! You can use clip in hair extensions to give you the necessary length(and volume) for the textured low bun. I’ve had brides come in for their bridal hair trial with all lengths of hair. Now let’s be realistic here and say that if you have a pixie cut or your hair is shaved in some areas, that is going to be too short, even with hair extensions.

Who this hairstyle works best for

Low textured buns work best for brides who are having outdoor weddings and indoor ceremonies as well. This hairstyle holds up well in the humid heat of North Carolina’s springs and summers and keeps hot hair off your back and shoulders. Low buns look great in the winter also but I would imagine some brides would want to wear their hair down in the winter to help keep themselves warm. Brides who normally wear their hair in a ponytail or bun would benefit best from this style since they are used to having their hair pulled back. Women who worry about curls falling or don’t like hair in their face would be good candidates for low, textured buns.

will this hairstyle last all day?

YES!! This is the best hairstyle choice if you want to be unbothered with your hair throughout the day. There’s no worry about curls falling and the use of hair pins secures this bun in place all day. Many of my brides text me the next day to say the bun held up into the next day after their wedding! If you want a low to no maintenance bridal hairstyle, low textured buns should be high on your list.

Best wedding vibe for textured low buns

To me, the wedding day vibes and themes that fit best with a low textured bun are outdoor ceremonies that have a romantic theme. Think garden weddings with tons of flowers. Soft, free flowing, graceful, feminine details like lace, embroidery, etc are a perfect fit. Vintage inspired weddings can be a great match with low, textured buns, while forest weddings are the creme de la creme with this hairstyle(I have yet to style a bride for a forest wedding but I am hopeful to do so one day!). Any setting in, or inspired by, the beauty of nature will match the curves and flows of a textured bun.

What kind of dress is best for the low textured bun?

Wedding dresses that have low backs, intricate lace detail, beaded embellishments, or patterns the bride would like to show are a great fit for this hairstyle. Dresses with silk, tulle and soft details would also work well for the low textured bun. Long cathedral, ethereal veils are a perfect match and sit effortlessly on top of the bun, while face framing pieces in the front give softness.

As you can see, I love this bridal hair style and it’s one of my most requested hairstyles as well as one of my signature looks! If you are considering a low textured bun for your outdoor intimate wedding or elopement in North Carolina, let’s connect! I look forward to hearing from you!
