Brides, Stop Doing This To Your Hair!
Yes, we’re looking at you if you’re thinking of doing these things with your hair!
Hey guys, it’s me again, Dareece, your future romantic bridal hair specialist in Durham NC. Over the years, I’ve seen brides do some interesting things with their hair…things that make me go: “Hmmm…why did she do that?” I know as a bride, you’re faced with a lot of decisions but If I may advise you in anything regarding your hair, it will be the following points:
STOP cutting your hair right before your wedding day.
Of course you want everything to be fresh and polished. I get that. Take a quarter of an inch off at the most. But don’t go in the salon talking about you want to take several inches off to clean everything up! Don’t do that! What happens is your ends either become super blunt and obvious if you’re wearing an all down style, or you end up with too many layers and those layers pop out of your updo or don’t blend well with your all down style. Or worse, your hair is now too short for the original planned hairstyle. Take it easy. Most women who do a dramatic cut on a normal day are looking for a big change, maybe because of life events. I understand wedding planning may be stressing you out or family dynamics are tap dancing all over your nerves. But don’t cut your hair in retaliation. Save that for after the wedding. Along with a solo vacation after the honeymoon.
STOP coloring your hair for the first time ever in life during the week of your wedding.
Why? Because color can be Pandora’s box. Don’t get me wrong, the new color can go really well and turn out exactly how you want it. I love this for you if this is your outcome! But…if the color goes wrong, like it doesn’t come out the tone you want or, worse, you have an allergic reaction, then what?? You literally have days to try to correct it, which can lead to stressing your hair and chemical damage. Nobody has time for fried ends in their wedding photos. If you have an allergic reaction to the color, you now have an unnecessary rash, irritated scalp, new medication, etc to deal with. Who wants to deal with that during wedding week or ever? Not you! Don’t do it. If you do choose to do color, test it out about three months prior and always, always ALWAYS get a patch test before getting color for the first time. Give yourself plenty of time to tweak the formula and get a touch up right before your wedding day. No copper color surprises, no rashes, no patches of hair missing! It’s a win for everyone.
STOP getting a chemical change of hair texture for the first time during wedding week.
Same as the color issue from above, you don’t know what your specific outcome will be. If you want a curly perm, do that a month or more prior. That allows you a chance to see how the curls will look on your hair and give the curls time to calm down before the wedding day. Natural hair brides, please do not get a relaxer for the first time right before your wedding. It’s a big change. You may not be mentally prepared for how your hair looks and feels afterwards. Give yourself a few months prior to try it out and get used to it. Or…don’t get this chemical service at all until after wedding day. There are products and techniques to give natural hair brides a slick, sleek hairstyle for their wedding day, if they desire that style. Same for brides who want curly hair. You don’t have to make these drastic changes right before. Link up with a bridal hair specialist who can give you the look you want without compromising the texture and integrity of your hair.
STOP choosing hairstyles that are not you.
Whether it’s trendy right now, your bff did it for her wedding, or your mom suggested this hairstyle, STOP! If you wear your hair down all the time, then why are you all of a sudden looking at doing a tight, slicked back bun that you know is going to give you a migraine in 30 minutes? Plus you hate wearing your hair slicked back. Wear it down and make yourself happy. Be true to you. Don’t get me wrong, it’s ok to experiment with your hair to see how you feel, but only do this if it’s what you truly want and you still feel like yourself. Take the time to find a hairstyle that works with how you normally wear your hair or makes you feel like you. Otherwise, you’ll be walking down the aisle with the extreme slick back or a ginormous amount of hair you never wear and your future spouse will be looking at you like “Who dat??!”. Never mind them, you’ll be looking at yourself in the mirror like wth did I just do. Don’t fall victim!
Alright, that’s all I got for now. Stay safe out here in these wedding planning streets. Don’t let yourself or your friends fall victim to these situations.
